Jim Foy is a BV Martindale Hubbell rated attorney licensed to practice law in all state courts in New Mexico since 1986. Mr. Foy is also licensed to practice in all federal courts in the District of New Mexico and the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals since 1988. From 1986 to 1996, Mr. Foy handled cases involving criminal defense, advised governmental entities, represented injuried claimants and insurance companies and practiced in front administrative agencies within the State of New Mexico. From 1997 until the Fall of 2003, Mr. Foy served as the elected District Attorney for the Sixth Judicial District (Grant, Luna and Hidalgo Counties). As District Attorney, Mr. Foy tried in excess of 20 criminal cases to a jury. Those cases included murder, child abuse resulting in great bodily injury, embezzlement from the elderly, larceny, burglary and gang-related crime. In addition, Mr. Foy prosecuted all types of criminal cases.
From the Fall of 2003 to December 2004, Mr. Foy was the Sixth Judicial District Judge in Division III (Grant, Luna and Hidalgo Counties). As District Judge, Mr. Foy ruled on hundreds of cases. Since January 2005, Mr. Foy has engaged in the private practice of law.
Mr. Foy has been an adjunct professor teaching business law at Western New Mexico University in Silver City, New Mexico. Mr. Foy has been an instructor for the New Mexico District Attorney's Association, teaching New Mexico prosecutors in the areas of voir dire and other matters involving a trial. Mr. Foy has been an instructor at the National College for District Attorneys in Columbia, South Carolina teaching newer prosecutors trial techniques, motions practice and direct examination. Mr. Foy has taught experienced prosecutors how to try complex cases.
